Five Steps to Business Success
September 20, 2007Business is a continuous process of learning. An entrepreneur has to accept that only thing permanent in business is change. The ups and downs of business can make even the boldest men cringe. The pressures of handling various activities, over and above meeting customer requirements can be quite challenging. Here are some tips on handling pressures. The solution is not so simple but these tips have been formulated for enduring business success.
Courage of conviction: When we begin any venture we usually conduct sufficient research and collect data on existing businesses in the same field as your prospective business. The beginning is always tough and getting through the initial phase is by itself a cause for celebration. Some where along the line, we are faced with insurmountable challenges. This is the time when we have to draw from the reserves of our conviction and march ahead. But in practice many entrepreneurs just give up and shut down shop. Maybe after another few days and a couple of tough occasions, the business would have taken off. The courage of conviction that you are going to succeed is the most important factor under the circumstances.
Clear goals and aspirations: Why do you want to start a business of your own? Do you have whatever it takes to be an entrepreneur? Or is it just a fantasy which has come to your mind? I have seen people wanting to start their own venture because their cousin has one. That doesn’t seem like a convincing reason to undertake a task which is likely to put your life at stake. One should be clear about the reasons for starting a business venture. The goals and aspirations are to be clearly spelled out, right at the beginning. Make no mistake. If your cousin has been successful does not mean you also will be.
Foresight: What is foresight? This is another question that is faced quite often. Foresight is not crystal gazing like many would be lead to believe. It is a conscious, intelligent and practical appreciation of the future. Being ready for the future is half the battle won. If we can intrinsically grasp the nuances of the business, we would not be shocked and surprised at the developments. We would be prepared and be ready with alternative arrangements.
Making a business plan: This is an area in which new businesses and those which are moving into new areas might require coaching. It is rather surprising at the opportunities and ideas which can evolve from a creative, out of the box thinking. All these have to be internalized. The business plan should encompass the vision and passion of the creator. This passion would automatically be transferred to all those who come across the business plan, may it be investors, shareholders or suppliers.
There are two types of business plans which are recommended. One for internal purposes and another one with a detailed plan with the financial projections. These two documents should serve as blue prints for the future venture.
Having an alternate plan: There is a view that if you start thinking of an alternate arrangement even before commencing a new venture, you are a pessimist. First of all, we are better prepared for the future and secondly once we have an alternate plan ready, we are likely to move ahead confidently. Businesses fail because they are not ready for the shocks and problems which a business is likely to face. It is always better to be prepared.
