The Key Characteristics Of An Entrepreneur
December 10, 2007Someone who is going to start a business is someone who can be efficient in using many abilities, either inborn or learned through study. A very important factor (depending on what kind of business they will engage in) is knowing how to manage finances. Obviously, they want to make a profit in their venture.
Before we look at the key characteristics of an entrepreneur, we must know what an entrepreneur is. Looking in a standard dictionary gives us this: a person who organizes, operates and assumes the risk for a business venture. While that is a good definition, it doesn’t fully describe the inspiring views of an entrepreneur and we could say the definition may fall a bit short. You could expand the definition of entrepreneur to be someone who begins a venture or enterprise that will obtain a profit for him or her, and you might be getting closer.
All that said — there are characteristics of an entrepreneur that can indicate if the person has it in him to adventure into the world of start-ups. These are pretty basic to someone’s success.
They must be willing to accept some risk. There will be some financial or personal risk in any opportunity they may create or pursue, and entrepreneurs will be willing to face these risks and uncertainties and hopefully, overcome them. Their beliefs in what they are doing will be strong enough to cope with the stress of the possible risks.
Many entrepreneurs will have the ability to make goals for themselves and plan how to reach them, and then get to work making those goals a reality. There is a great leadership factor within them, and they can usually inspire others with their determination. When working from home, entrepreneurs MUST have this ability as otherwise they become distracted and fail to be productive.
For the most part, entrepreneurs don’t mind hard work. They will go above and beyond the standard nine to five schedules of most people in getting their venture off the ground, and continue long hours as needed in the development of their new business.
The true entrepreneur will be found to possess a quality of responsibility. They are the founders of their enterprise; they created it. They want to see it succeed and will give of themselves to see that it happens, all the while knowing their actions are the ones that make it succeed or fail. Some learn the hard way, by having a collapse seem imminent, but avoiding it by all means. Others have studied ways to avoid failure and apply what they know to stay away from the pitfalls. But in all cases, they know it is THEIR actions that determine their success, no one else. This is responsibility.
Optimism is a quality often found in the entrepreneur. They normally have a very positive philosophy and feel that almost anything is possible. They maintain the attitude that they can achieve what they intend to achieve, and are proud of the successes on the way. And again, in a work at home endeavor, this must be maintained in order to succeed. Any network marketing, multi-level marketing company would contribute to this attitude with their materials but you still have to create it for yourself to stay on top.
To begin an adventure in starting a business, a person must have some organizational ability. They have to coordinate many things, often all by themselves. But even bringing others in to work for them adds even more activity, responsibilities and paperwork. They have to get it all together so it works.
In the end, an entrepreneur will be measuring his success by profit. And so he is oriented to financial security and making some wealth, making life easier for himself.
These qualities may not be found in every entrepreneur out there, but many possess the majority of them, and will need to in order to succeed.
